How to Calculate Roofing Squares From Square Footage

Convert your roof area into roofing squares and shingle bundles. Learn how to calculate square footage for roof shingles and metal roofing materials.

You have done the hard work. You measured your house footprint, multiplied by the slope factor, and you finally have your total roof surface area.

Now, you are staring at the number "2,350 square feet" and wondering how that actually translates into a trip to the home improvement store.

Contractors do not buy shingles by the square foot. If you don't know how to translate your raw area into the packaging roofers actually use, you cannot build an accurate material estimate. Fortunately, the math is incredibly simple. Use our Roof Square Footage Calculator to convert it instantly, or read on to see how the math works.

What is a Roofing Square?

In the roofing industry, a "square" is simply 100 square feet of roof area.

To convert your final square footage into roofing squares, you just divide your total number by 100.

2,350 sq ft ÷ 100 = 23.5 squares.

It is that easy. But that number is not quite ready for the checkout counter. You need to understand how those squares are packaged.

Converting Squares to Shingle Bundles

When you pull your truck up to the supply yard, you will be buying shingles in heavy, plastic-wrapped bundles.

Standard architectural asphalt shingles are packaged with exactly three bundles per roofing square. Therefore, one bundle covers roughly 33.3 square feet.

To calculate your shingle bundles:

  1. Take your roofing squares (e.g., 23.5 squares).
  2. Multiply by 3.
  3. 23.5 × 3 = 70.5 bundles.
  4. Round up. You cannot buy half a bundle. You need to order exactly 71 bundles.

What About Metal Roofs?

If you are upgrading your home to a metal roof, the base geometry works exactly the same. You still find your footprint and apply the pitch multiplier to get your total square footage.

However, metal roofing is not sold in 33.3-sq-ft bundles. It is typically sold by the linear foot in specific panel widths (often 36 inches wide for standing seam or exposed fastener panels).

Once you calculate your total roofing squares, a metal roofing supplier will take that number and convert it into a custom cut-list of panels based on the length from your eave to your ridge. You still need to calculate roofing squares from square footage to give them a baseline, but they will handle the panel breakdown.

By understanding how to convert your square footage into squares and bundles, you protect yourself. You can look at a contractor's quote, check their "squares" against your own math, and know immediately if they are inflating the order.
