How to Sizing Gutter Systems
Gutter sizing follows standards developed by the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association (SMACNA). We first compute the Effective Watershed Area ($A_{eff}$) by multiplying the flat roof footprint by a pitch factor. Next, we determine water runoff rate based on rainfall intensity ($I$, in/hr). Gutters are then sized to support the peak flow rate without overflowing.
Measuring Methods
- Pitch Factors: Flat (1.0), Moderate (1.05 - 1.10), Steep (1.20 - 1.30).
- Rainfall Intensity: Inches per hour expected during the peak 5-minute period of a local design storm.
