Understanding Roofing Waste Math
Standard roofing shingles cannot cover all sections whole. Installers cut shingles diagonally to fit hips, ridges, and valleys. The discarded triangular offcuts represent waste. The standard math adds a buffer percentage to your measured surface area before converting to squares or purchasing bundles.
Measuring Methods
- Gable Waste (10%): Simple rectangular facets require cuts only at rakes and eaves, minimizing waste.
- Hip Waste (15%): Hips require diagonal cuts on both sides of every hip rafter, creating more offcuts.
Waste Area = Measured Area * (Waste Factor / 100)
Total Area = Measured Area + Waste Area
