Building codes require attic ventilation based on floor space area. The standard 1/300 rule dictates that you need 1 square foot of Net Free Ventilation Area (NFVA) for every 300 square feet of attic floor. This total is split 50/50 between intake (lower soffits) and exhaust (upper ridge vents) to establish balanced convection airflow.

Measuring Methods

  • Intake Ventilation: Draws cool fresh air in through the lower eaves (soffit vents).
  • Exhaust Ventilation: Allows hot, humid air to escape out the peak (ridge vents).
Total NFVA (sq in) = (Attic Area / 300) * 144

For a 1,500 sq ft attic floor under the 1/300 rule: Total NFVA = (1,500 / 300) * 144 = 720 sq inches. Exhaust Target (50%) = 360 sq inches. Ridge Vent Length needed = 360 sq inches / 18 sq in/ft rating = 20 linear feet.
