About Butterfly (Inverted V) Roofs

A butterfly roof features two opposing planes that slope downward toward a central valley, creating an inverted V-shape. Popular in mid-century modern and sustainable architecture, butterfly roofs allow soaring high perimeter windows and centralized rainwater collection. Because all runoff drains into an internal central valley, continuous commercial-grade membrane lining (TPO/EPDM) and high-capacity scuppers are mandatory, with a 20% waste allowance.

Geometric Takeoff Formula

How to Calculate Butterfly (Inverted V) Roof Square Footage

Total Area = Plane A (Length × Rafter A) + Plane B (Length × Rafter B)

A butterfly roof features two opposing planes that slope downward toward each other, forming a central valley trough instead of a ridge. Calculate each sloped plane by multiplying length by rafter slope length, then sum them.

Measuring a 40' × 28' Mid-Century Modern Butterfly Home

Home measures 40 ft long with two symmetrical 3/12 downward planes meeting in a central valley.

  1. Include overhangs: Length = 42 ft; each slope run = 15 ft.
  2. Calculate 3/12 slope multiplier: 1.0308.
  3. Rafter slope length = 15 ft × 1.0308 = 15.46 ft.
  4. Calculate one plane: 42 ft × 15.46 ft = 649.3 sq ft.
  5. Multiply by 2 for both planes: 649.3 × 2 = 1,298.6 sq ft (~13.0 squares).
  6. Add 20% waste allowance for commercial valley lining: 13.0 × 1.20 = 15.6 squares.
Result: 1,299 sq ft surface area; order 16 squares of material with heavy-duty membrane valley lining.

Critical Flashing & Leak Vulnerability Zones

Catastrophic valley water volume. All precipitation from the entire building drains into the center valley trough. A leak here floods the center of the house.

Mandatory Flashing Details

  • Commercial-grade 60-mil TPO/EPDM membrane lining extending at least 36 inches up both slopes
  • Oversized scuppers and heavy industrial downspouts
  • Secondary emergency overflow scuppers

Ventilation Strategy

Unvented cathedral roof with closed-cell spray foam insulation, or cross-joist baffles exhausting to exterior end walls.

Structural Framing & Load Distribution

Engineered inverted scissor trusses or heavy central steel valley beam carrying inward-sloping rafters.

Load Behavior: High concentrated snow and water load along the central spine. Requires robust structural sizing.

Why a 20% Waste Factor is Required

Extensive custom sheet metal fabrication and heavy membrane overlap in the central valley require a 20% waste allowance.

Primary Cutting Scrap Locations: Central valley intersection, High perimeter rakes, Scupper through-wall cuts.

Best Roofing Materials for a Butterfly (Inverted V) Roof

ClassificationRecommended MaterialsEngineering Notes
Highly RecommendedStanding Seam Metal Panels with Membrane Valley, Full-Deck TPO Membrane, Modified BitumenNever use standard asphalt shingles in a butterfly roof valley. Always line the trough with heat-welded commercial membrane.
Use With CautionStandard asphalt shingles (high leak risk in central runoff basin)Check slope limitations and local building codes.
Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers about roof square footage calculations, pitch slope factors, shingle bundles, and ordering materials.

Traditional roofs shed water outward to the exterior perimeter. Butterfly roofs do the exact opposite: they channel 100% of rain and snow melt into the middle of the structure. If leaves, ice, or debris clog the central scupper drain, water ponds in the valley and can quickly back up beneath roof flashings.
